Today I went to visit the Tim Walker exhibition at Somerset House. I had come across his photographs in various editorials for Vogue but I never knew that all the fantastical elements featured in the pictures were actually real sized! (or rather, oversized) It is a relief to know that in this technological era we live in where photoshop and digital creations reign, there still are artists who prefer to do things the "old fashioned" way.
Seeing all the life models (dolls, insects, skeletons...) created and made especially for the photoshoots makes you realize how much artistic and aesthetic thought Tim Walker puts into his photography. It is all about the composition, the space and the creation of a magical world where the viewers can be transported each time they gaze at his photos.
Walking into the exhibition is like entering a fairytale: anything is possible. The first thing you encounter is a real sized plane, crashed against the wall, an oda to the film "A Matter of Life and Death thh". As you go through the rooms, you encounter a Swan-carriarge, Agyness Deyn on a beach (yes, with real sand) and a snail, casually sliding up the wall. The photographs, a mixture of editorials, portraits and personal work, are beautifully arranged around old fashioned transport wooden boxes, as if they could be packed up at any moment and dissappear to the utopian world they came from.
